The winter can wreak havoc on your car. The cold temperatures and inclement weather can leave you in some less than ideal predicaments. To get past them, use these tricks.

Winter Car Care Tricks and Tips

The winter can be a tricky time for all. From slippery floors to fogged up windows, it can lead to plenty of sticky situations that you don't feel totally prepared for. When it comes to your car, the winter cold can make a simple car trip a mess. To make this easier for you, check out these tips and tricks that will make taking care of your car easier this winter.

Keep Your Windshield Fog-Free

During the winter, it can seem near impossible to keep your windshield clear and fog-free. Before your windshield even has a chance to get foggy, take the necessary measures to prevent the fogging. Start by putting shaving cream on the inside of your windshield. Carefully get it on every inch of your windshield and then wipe it off. Since shaving cream has some of the ingredients present in commercial defoggers, it can make foggy windshields a thing of the past. If the air in your car constantly feels humid, this can lead to tons of fog. Do your best to eliminate all of the sources of this humidity, such as open water containers or plants. It can also help to leave some kitty litter in your car since this traps moisture. Don't just throw it everywhere, but rather put it in a sock or another porous container that will let it do its job.

Lost Your Ice Scraper?

Walking out to your car in the morning to discover it has a layer of ice on the windshield can be almost painful. Getting rid of this isn't as easy as using hot water (don't do this unless you want a cracked windshield), and will require a bit of elbow grease. If you don't have an ice scraper, you may think all hope is lost, but that's not the case. While an ice scraper will make the job easier, a sturdy item like an old credit card or an old gift card can do the trick in an emergency. If you're at home, you can also use a plastic spatula to get the ice off your windshield safely without damaging the glass.

Avoid Getting Stuck

When it gets cold out, may things can freeze. This includes the locks on your car doors. If you have to stick your car key into the keyhole, it can even cause your keys to stuck inside. Avoid this annoying and frustrating situation by preparing your key. Put a bit of hand sanitizer on it before sticking it in the keyhole. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer will help melt whatever is frozen in the keyhole. To keep your car running smoothly this season, give it a synthetic oil change in Minneapolis. Use an oil like AMSOIL's Signature Series 0W-20 Synthetic Motor Oil to keep your engine well-protected and running strong all winter long. To find more great products like this, contact the oil pros at All Service Oil. Give them a call at (763) 257-3130 or visit their online store to learn more or to place your order!

Avoid Icy Side Mirrors

If your side mirrors have a tendency to freeze and develop ice overnight, it can be tough to see anything on them in the morning. To avoid this conundrum, simply put plastic bags around them every night. Anything from a plastic grocery store bag to a ziplock bag can do the trick. When you slip them off in the morning, your mirrors will be clean and ready for use!

The Penny Test

Since your tires are massively important this season, it makes sense to check on your tread. This may seem like a tough task, but it's as easy as finding a penny. Once you have a penny in your hand, insert the coin in between the tire tread with Lincoln upside down. If his head is still mostly covered, then your tire tread is still fine. If you can see most of Lincoln's head, your tires may be too worn to keep you safe.
